Nivko, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Nivko (Nivkosan English: Dᴇᴍөᴋʀᴈᴛɪᴋ Sөƶᴈʟɪsᴛ Rɪᴘᴈᴃʟɪᴋ ᴏғ Nɪᴠᴋөs), is a Republic located in the northern area of the Versutian Federation. It is bordered by Kotkolandiya to the west and the Meritocratic States to the east and north, and has the island of Astollia to the south of it. While the nation is young compared to other nations, the settlers of the nation are the first known humans to have lived on the land. The land was first discovered and claimed on the 2nd of April, 1814 by Lord Nivk and his fleet who had set out to find new land to settle.

The large population of 1.47 billion lives across the majority of the nation, although the northern parts are less populated due to it's large mountains and thick forests. The most populated areas are near the coast, which accounts for nearly 40% of the nation's boarders.

History

Pre-Nivko

The history of the area before Nivko is very limited, very few traces of past nations have been found in the area. A few small artifacts have been found that describe the nation of Ottonia, whose capital was the city of Bismarckotopia. While the location of the city is known (on the eastern coast of the Great Koskian Lake, near Koskorsk), it's ruins have yet to be found, and has become the Atlantis equivalent to Nivko.

Early Nivko (1814-1818)

Lord Nivk and his fleet set foot on our land in Ariono Bay on the 2nd of April 1814, after months of sailing. The crew quickly searched the area for signs of other civilizations, finding none, and then claimed the land by the name of Nivkos. Afterwards an exploration group, including Nivk, was formed to explore what other nations there were, and what land there was to claim. On the way they had found the nation of Kotkolandiya and the Meritocratic States. When the group returned in February of 1815 to where they first landed, the crew that was left behind had started a small village by the name of Nivkostad.

After a couple of years of living in Nivkostad, Nivk and his advisers realized that they would need more citizens if they were going to build an entire nation. A small campaign group was formed to travel to neighboring nations to promote immigration to Nivko. After a few months of campaigning Nivk and his advisers felt that there were enough people to start building his nation. Groups of about 100 immigrants were selected to travel to chosen locations and start settlements. In total 24 settlements were established during that time period.

The Shadow Hawk War (1862 - 1863)

During the late 1850's, a cult had been founded by Klenar Genskin within the city of Arionos. Their views were that the all-mighty god, the Shadow Hawk, needed to control as much land as it could in order to 'redeem' all it's subjects from evil. Genskin claimed that he was the son of the Shadow Hawk and that they needed to redeem as many people as possible before all of the Shadow Hawk's power was unleashed through Genskin. The cult began spreading propaganda and began building up followers. By 1860 approximately 4% of the entire population, or 82,000, mostly from Arionos, were part of The Order of the Shadow Hawk.

On the 17th of April 1862, the cult began their revolt against the government and taking over Arionos. Soldiers were quickly dispatched to Arionos to suppress the revolt, but it failed. The Order had control of the city two days after the revolt began. The Order began making their way to the capital of Nivkostad, since all power to the nation was technically vested in the city. Along the way they invaded small villages and other cities north of Arionos (Nivkostad was more to the east). The Order was met by resistance from the Nivkosan army, and while they did slow the progress of the invasion, they could not stop it. By the start August 1862 they had already reached the capital and began taking the city for the Shadow Hawk. On the 23rd of August the Nivkostad had fallen to The Order of the Shadow Hawk, and all power of Nivko, which they had renamed to The Kingdom of the Shadow Hawk, had been vested to them. They elected Klenar Genskin as their sole leader, a representative of their immortal leader the Shadow Hawk.

The Order moved their capital to Arionos, which they had renamed to Genskopia. While The Order technically had control of the nation, they wanted to enforce their rule and 'redeem' all of the Kingdom's citizens. They began traveling the rest of the nation announcing there newly-grasped power over the nation. They began enforcing their new tough laws, one of the most harsh being not following the government's orders was punishable by torture and/or death. While the Order was advancing through the nation, they were continuously met by resistance, again all efforts failed.

In October 1862, the Nivkosan army had gained the upper hand in resisting The Order of the Shadow Hawk. They managed to push the Order back twice as fast as the Order were advancing. By November 1862 the Nivkosans had gained back control of the capital and the nation was no longer in the enemy's control. Once the Nivkosans began making there way to Genskopia (previously Arionos), resistance by The Order became stronger, but it wasn't strong enough to stop the advancement of the Nivkosans. On the 10th of February 1863, Arionos was back in control of it's original founders and The Order of the Shadow Hawk had been completely suppressed.

During the war 3,107 from the Nivkosan army had died, approximately 4,300 from the Order of the Shadow Hawk, including Klenar Genskin, and 263 citizens had died from The Order's punishments.

The Death of Nivk & The Democratic Republic Era (1888-1945)

On the 6th November of 1888, a few days after his 100th birthday, Nivk passed away peacefully in his sleep. A national day of mourning was declared on the day and he was buried in the Ariono Peninsula, which was most likely the land he sighted when he first saw Nivko.

Before Nivk's death, the country was lead in a dictatorship-style, with only his advisers influencing Nivk's decision. The question raised how the country would be run then and into the future. It was discovered that his will stated that country would be lead as a Democratic Republic, and that his advisers would be the first to run the Parliament. Before Nivk's death, commonly refered to as the 'Settlement Era', the nation was focused setting up the nation and spreading it. By 1888 the nation had already been well-established and the government's focus needed to change to advance the nation. More funding went into creating industry and other jobs to boost the economy.

Republican Empire Era (1945-1966)

From the boost in the nation's economy from previous years, the quality of life for the citizens improved greatly. From this improvement in their standard of life, both the people and the government had a spike in their patriotism towards Nivko. They felt the need to spread their ideas and quality of life to other peoples of the world, and unite them under one flag. The government at one point proposed to invade other nations and take the land for themselves. This caused a large debate between those who were patriotic and those who wanted to remain peaceful. Eventually the government and people turned down the idea of taking other nations, deeming the idea too extreme.

While the nation wasn't going to invade another nation, they still felt the need to spread their ideologies and way of life. Rather than spreading their nation through land and war, they were going to win the minds of the world through their words. A large international campaign began advertising how the way of life in Nivko was the life that all nations should strive for. While the campaign did double immigration rates, many other nations were offended by Nivko's arrogance in their campaign. Eventually the campaign was retracted from the international spotlight and became more directed towards the nations that had similar political ideologies. After years of campaigning to more specific nations, it was realized that it was no longer effective and their dreams of winning the minds of the world stayed nothing but a dream.

Democratic Socialist Republic (1966-Present)

After the failed attempt of trying to expand the nation, focus was shifted onto the people and improving their lifestyle and freedom even more. The majority of the population believed that the best way to do this was to make the nation's government more left-winged. But that idea didn't go without it's opposition, others argued that making a right-winged nation would allow for both a freer people and economy. The left-winged people countered their ideas, saying that by going right-winged, the people would suffer due to the smaller welfare and government funding. Once the government did become left-winged, the opposition slowly began to die down.

Within 5 years of the shift in political ideology, the average pay was one of the highest in the region, and homelessness in Nivko was unheard of. The quality of the nation's education system and healthcare ensured that all citizens would be able to have a long, fulfilling lifestyle.

Geography and Climate

Within Nivko there are two main geographic and climatic regions: the northern and southern. Geographically, the south is mainly comprised of temperate forest and is relatively flat, with it's peak point being at an altitude of 1,360m. This area is also a lot more urbanized than the north. The north is almost wholly comprised of taiga and snow capped mountains, with it's peak being 4,420m. This area is also a lot less urbanized, mainly comprising of villages and small towns.

Culture

Nivko's traditional culture is largely influenced by eastern European culture due to the eastern European heritage of the original settlers. Modern day culture is more influenced by western European due to the culture's overall spread as well as the influx in immigrants from western Europe.

Greentext

Greeentext is one of the most unique forms of art in Nivko. Greentexting is a mix of poetry and novel-writing in the form of dot points marked by '>', usually accompanied by an image on the left. The term greentext comes form the art's origins on image boards such as 4chan, 8chan and wizardchan, where placing a '>' would make the following text green. Although the nation of which the art originated from is unknown due to the anonymity of said image boards, Nivko has become renowned for producing famous greentexts and anons (NOTE: anon is the term used to describe the author of a greentext). Nivko is one of the only nations to feature high-school classes and university courses for greentexting. Recent government proposition has presented the idea that greentexting may be taught to children as young as 8 due to it's increasing complexity. Before the large-scale adoption of greentexting the art was fairly simple to grasp and create, but since then the art has become more complex and has many more aspects to it.
