A coronation is a (typically lavish) ceremony in which a monarch (or his/her consort) is formally crowned. Usually this applies to kingdoms, empires, sultanates or emirates; but nations with "lesser" royal heads of state, such as principalities or grand duchies, may also hold coronations for their leaders. As coronations require a lot of planning, it is typical for a monarch not to be formally crowned until months into their reign.
Republics hold similar ceremonies for swearing in their non-royal heads of state; these are typically called inaugurations.
