The Iranian General Election of 2018 resulted in a landslide victory for the Iranian Labor Party led by Chrisjen Avasarala who took over in the wake of the resignation of popular Xavier Torezah. Torezah resigned after the loss of his son and wife in a failed assassination attempt on his life. His Foreign Minister, Chrisjen Avasarala became Prime Minister after being elected Leader of the NLP unopposed. In this election, Avasarala was elected after successfully portraying herself as the only successor to the popular Torezah, the major issues at this election were Climate Change and Iran's role as the world's fourth largest polluter in it, housing and its inaffordability in major cities and how Iran would spend its 189bn Toman surplus.
After the defeat, Howard Talqanisi resigned as leader of the Liberal Democrats to be succeeded by Emrys Taghdian. This election was remarkable for the resilience of the NLP's majority and success in increasing its majority into traditionally conservative areas in Syria and Iraq.
