Etymology

The name "Corona" is thought to be derived from either Krona or Korona which are Germanic roots for "royal" or "crown", alluding to the monarchy of Corona. However, Corona is also Latin for "crown" or "laurel wreath" and is considered a symbol of authority in ancient Rome. The influence of this time could either come from ancient Germanic language or from the Holy Roman Empire.

History

First Inhabitants

The first recorded inhabitants were the Ahrensburg culture in 11000 to 10000 BC, located around the town that was named after them. Artifacts discovered that they left behind included lances, arrows, and pottery. Around 4000 to 3000 BC, more sedentary Germanic tribes moved into the area and lived in small villages, fishing and hunting. Many of these Germanic tribes were either hunters or fishers. In 2500 BC, bronze was discovered and began to spur tribal trade with other tribes all across the region. The Coronans were also introduced to iron to from Imperial Rome although they had little contact with them until around AD 500 when Coronan tribes took part in the destruction of Rome with the other Germanic tribes as evidenced by the large amount of loot that was discovered.

Medieval Corona

Between 500 and 1000, Corona was primarily torn apart by warring factions and bloodshed that was common among the many German tribes although they sometimes united to fight the Nordic vikings that were wrecking havoc on their coastal settlements. In 1000, Christian missionaries began to travel throughout Germania and in 1100, Corona converted to Christianity and King Gregory I proclaimed the Kingdom of Corona from his small little village. Corona quickly had a church erected and began to enter more formal relations with its many Christian German neighbors now. Coronans made most of the money of of the trading of game, fir, timber, and woodcraft. In 1349 however, the Black Plague struck Corona as it did all the other German kingdoms and the disease ravaged the town of Corona, although the countryside was relatively safe. It is estimated, according to records taken by local priests, that about 69% of Corona died as a result of the plague. In 1528, the spread of Protestantism reached Corona and they converted, establishing a Lutheran church in the Catholic church's place.

In 1620, Corona got involved in a 3 years war against Ashram that erupted as a result of Corona being cheated out of spices. However, a truce was reached, being brokered by Tomainia and Weselton. But in 1680, a religious war exploded between Westphalia and Bacteria against Weselton, Tomainia, and Ashram. Corona got involved and when the war ended in 1695, Catholicism had been toppled in Westphalia and Bacteria had been forced to surrender. In the 1700s, Corona remained isolated again, focusing on trading locally but the early 1800s, they forged an alliance with Weselton and Arendelle through marriage.

Brazilian Invasion, Subjugation, and Freedom

In 1865, after invading Arendelle, Brazilian troops came and attacked the Kingdom of Corona. Corona's armies were no match for those of Brazil and they collapsed summarily. However, a dispute between Arendelle and the Roman Republic erupted over who was going to govern Corona. Being allies with Arendelle, Corona naturally preferred Arendelle to the increasingly brutal and corrupt Roman Republic so they welcomed invading Arendelle troops and occupation. Corona remained a protectorate for the length of the reign of the United Kingdom of Arendelle, Weselton, and the Southern Isles but even after the fall of the Brazilian Empire in 1872, Corona still remained a protectorate of Arendelle due to the increasing hostility of the Roman Republic. In 1875, after the Roman Republic was forced to relinquish all its former possessions, Corona was given independence from Arendelle.

Industrialization and Imperialism

Having a shielded economy and benefiting from a union with Arendelle, Corona launched off and began to industrialize in some parts, creating dams, channeling power, and even starting mass factory production of food goods and wood products. Corona also began to expand imperially as well and in 1885, Corona discovered the sparsely inhabited region of Iceland and renamed it the Territory of Islandia, claiming it for Corona. With access to these raw natural resources including furs, pelts, and whale oil, Corona began heavy trade with its surrounding Norupean neighbors while peace lasted.

Norupean Wars

When Caucasian Rus declared war on Tomainia and Weselton entered into the war on Tomainia's side, Corona was forced in join in 1917 so Coronan troops got involved in the heavy trench fighting from 1917 to 1925 in which Corona sustained heavy casualties and was forced to surrender in 1927 but was not faced with very harsh restrictions due to their involvement in the conflict. In the Depression that ensued, Corona's economy suffered heavily, unemployment maxing at 30-40%. Even worse was the Rioting of 1933 when groups of people began demanding for the King to step down and they even launched a revolution that was summarily crushed in 1936 with Tomainian help. However, when the Norupean War III broke out, Tomainian troops invaded Corona in 1938. Corona offered little resistance and was soon heavily incorporated into the Tomainian Reich. After its collapse in 1946, King Fredrick II who was in exile in Weselton resumed power and brought about a certain level of minor stability.

Modernity

Since Corona's revival as a monarchy, they have taken a more isolationist stance but they refused to join the Federal Union of Weselton in the 1950s, preferring to enter into closer ties with Arendelle instead. By 1990, Corona's economy had recovered enough from the devastation of war but they have been very hesitant to join the World Assembly or Congress of Nations. However in late July of 2014, they became a founding member of the Norupean Union.
