The Barony of Rimroth, commonly known as Rimroth, is a nation in the European Union. Rimroth is split in two parts by the Black Sea. The southern part, being the largest of the two, consists of six of the seven provinces of Rimroth. The northern part consists of the province of Nordphalen. West of Nordphalen are several Rimrothian islands, called the Windheim Islands. Rimroth borders Red Croatia in the west, and the Microstate of Inquista at the eastern side of Nordphalen.

History

Middle Ages (500 - 1500)

The Sachsons

Usually it is considered that Rimrothian History begins with the Sachsons. The Sachsons lived in tribes in the area that is now Rimroth. The Sachsons settled down in settlements which eventually grew over the centuries. These different tribes eventually merged into what is now called the Sachsons. The first known leader of the Sachsons was Agot I. He came to power around 600 AD. The Sachsons, being rather obnoxious, killed Agot I. The leaders following Agot I were murdered as well until Agot III managed to stay alive much longer than his predecessors. This was around 680 AD. He is generally accepted as the First King of Rimroth.

Religion

The Sachsons believed in a number of gods. This religion, called Gudarism. The supporters of this religion are called Gudarists. About 15% of the Rimrothian population are still Gudarists. The Sachsons built numerous shrines across Rimroth, the oldest being from the third century BC. Later they also built temples, which are still being used today. Gudarism consists of 12 Gods living on the Fernpeak (Fer=God in Rimrothian, Fern=plural), the largest mountain of Rimroth. It also consists of a lot of half-gods and other mytholic creatures.

The Founding of Rimroth-City

The oldest evidence of a settlement found in Rimroth-City is over 2000 years old. Rimroth-City was the largest of the Sachson settlements, and grew rather rapidly around 1000 AD, not only geographically, but also economically and militarilly. Rimroth-City became the trade-center of the Mediterranean- and Black Sea.

Expansion and discovery

The Rimrothian Ships were one of the best in the world and certainly the fastest. The ships were used to sail the seven seas, explore the world, trade with other people, wage war, and plunder coast lines. The ships were built from pinewood from the large pine forest south of Rimroth-City. This is the largest forest in Rimroth today. The ships consisted of one deck, with spaces below the deck to keep cargo dry. On the deck was one large sail, and also lots of benches where crew sat rowing. The combination of the sail and the rowers made this ship move rapidly across the seas. With these ships discovered the Rimrothians discovered most of the coastlines of Europe, however they did not reach the other continent before 1320.

A typical Rimrothian Ship

Rimroth contained only the provinces of Ravndall and Vonrade. King Aldred expanded Rimroth to the province Westmark in 912, and Eastmark and Fordall in 923. King Gunjar expanded to the last province of the mainland: Fernpeak. The Rimrothians believe the Gods live on the mountian Fernpeak in the heart of the province Fernpeak. They did not tried to climb the mountain.

The Reign of the Barons

King Ardris II died in 1230. Lyandrus was his oldest son, and heir to the throne by law. His younger brother Zarias, however, took the throne for himself and threatened Lyandrus, so he did not try to take it from Zarias. Zarias sent an assassin, twice, to assasinate Lyandrus. This failed both times because Lyandrus was protected by members of the Kingsguard, who still remained loyal. After the failed attempts to assassinate Lyandrus, Zarias fled Rimroth-City. He managed to earn the trust of the landlords surrounding Ravndall and returned with an army to siege Rimroth-City. Lyandrus was able to defend the city for over a year, and started calling himself Farindar, which means "The Holder" in Rimrothian. Lyandrus Farindar defeated Zarias and conquered Rimroth back. He however, never thought of himself as King. He did not deemed himself worthy, because he lost most of Rimroth. He reigned as a Baron during the siege. When he conquered Rimroth back, he never took the title of King. From this (1243) day onwards, Rimroth is ruled by Barons.

The riches of Rimroth

Rimroth, being one of the most important trade centres of the Mediterranean- and Black Sea, started to grow very rich because of taxes. In 1324 Baron Harald II started to charge toll on ships passing the Ravnstrait.

These riches were used to significantly modernise Rimroth-City and the other important cities of Rimroth, for example: Goroth, Hoy-Baris, Leitryk, Alaran and Langerbayn. The improvements were city walls, cobbled roads, bigger castles etcetera.

Christianity?

Because Gundarism, the Rimrothian religion, was strongly present in Rimroth, Christianity couldn't get a foothold in Rimroth. Therefore only three christian buildings are present in Rimroth. A cathedral in Rimroth-City, a small church in Kraker-Beyn, and a chapel in Alaran. Because Christianity was not that strong in Rimroth, the dark ages were not that dark at all in Rimroth. On the contrary, science continued ever onwards.

Universities

Around 1250, a lot of universities opened throughout across the whole of Rimroth, the university of Rimroth-City being the oldest and also the largest. A lot of people went to universities. This was possible because more and more people went to live in cities, in contrast to living on the countryside. The increasing population of the cities meant more and more people went to universities. This gave a boost to the development of technologies and science.

Appointment of the Jarls

Baron Harald II appointed a leader to every province of Rimroth, to make ruling realm easier for him in 1321. These rulers were called Jarls.Ravndall would be ruled by the Baron's brother, Asgeir Farindar. Since this day Ravndall is ruled by the brother of the Baron, in the Baron's name. Each Jarl also chose an animal to represent the province.

The province, and their jarls.

Province Jarl Capital of province Animal to represent province
Ravndall Jarl Farindar Rimroth-City crow
Eastmark Jarl Gråbjørn Reykenhal grey Bear
Vonrade Jarl Uglemiehet Kar-Bayn owl
Fordall Jarl Kotka Langerbayn two headed eagle
Westmark Jarl Sjenerliste Tristifer fox
Fernpeak Jarl Hjerte Andrgarten white Bear

Note that Jarl Gråbjørn and Jarl Hjerte are members of the same family, and therefore have almost the same animal. Also note that Nordphalen and the Windheim Islands are not included, because they were not part of Rimroth.

The Sjenerliste family died out in 1682. The Jarl of Westmark is since then a member of the Rever family.

Borgerkrigstiden

During the 14th century a civil war took place. A man named Gjurd claimed he was a descendant of Zarias and therefore needed to sit on the Seat. During the reign of Baron Hans, in 1379 this resulted in a civil war between supporters of Gjurd, and supporters of the Baron. Jarl Uglemiehet of Vonrade rallied to Gjurd's side, because he saw a chance to become more powerful. The civil war raged for three years. During the civil war, Rimroth-City was put to the torch, and the west of Rimroth-City burned down. The war came to an ending when Kar-Bayn was sieged, and Gjurd and Jarl Uglemiehet were killed. Jarl Uglemiehet brother, who was not at all happy with the Jarl's decision to support Gjurd, had sided with Baron Hans Farindar. He then was appointed Jarl of Vonrade once the civil war was over.

Geography

Rimroth coastlines compromise about 2/3 of the Black Sea, and also a large portion of the western coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. The coastlines on the Mediterranean Sea consist largy of high cliffs. Rimroth is dominated by large mountainous terrain, and also enormous forests. The Westmark, the most western province, consists of highlands, and therefore is relatively cold. Frozen ground can be found any time of the year in the mountainious parts of Rimroth. The Windheim Islands, west of Nordphalen, are very windy and quite cold, and therefore they are called Windheim. Meaning Home of the Winds in Rimrothian. Rimroth has also got three rivers, running from south to north, from the mountains to the Black Sea. The middle river, the Vun, also contains a very large and deep lake.

Because of the cliffs at the westcoast of Rimroth, and the fact that the Western part exists of highlands, it is very windy, and quite cold there, even in summer. In Winter temperatures can reach -20 degrees centigrade there. Almost the whole southern border of Rimroth contains of mountain ranges. The provinces Vonrade and Fordall in the south are also very cold during winter, and less so in summer, because of their height. The provinces of Ravndall and Eastmark have mild summers, and relatively warm winters, in comparison with the provinces described before. The province of Fernpeak is one large mountain range with the Fernpeak (the mountain!) in the middle. Because of its height, it's also quite cold here, across the whole year.

Stunning and dramatic scenery and landscape can be found throughout Rimroth. The stunning cliffs at the westcoast, the enormous forests of Ravndall and Eastmark, or the large mountain ranges bordering the South of Rimroth, Rimroth has quite a nice collection of scenery for the nature enthousiast.
