The Republic of Santuana is a democratic federal republic and a former regional superpower comprising eight states and a federal capital district. The country is situated in the region of Catena, geographically dominating the southeast of the continent of Ceolaan. With a population of 3,197,454,000 and an estimated land area of 48,452,301 square miles it is one of the largest nations in the region.

The Constitution of Santuana was ratified by the new nation's first Head of State, and former resistance leader, Ernesto Ortega in July 2014 following a successful rebellion against a communist dictatorship. Formerly known as the Republic of Santosa the rebels, as they were classed by the brutal communist regime that preceded their new government, opted to rename their homeland to forge a new nation free of the evils of the old. The nation's inhabitants chose to begin referring to themselves as Santuano to complete the foundation of a new nation and the Republic of Santuana Bill of Rights was enacted soon after. The Bill of Rights granted the Santuano people a long list of inalienable rights that could not be withheld or impeded upon. Further laws were passed to limit the time a President may be in office to two terms, with a presidential term being three years. Democratic elections will occur every three years at which time a presidential candidate may replace the incumbent President if he/she gains more votes. Unless he steps down after three years or fails to win enough votes Ernesto Ortega, the current President, is expected to serve two full terms.

Etymology

Santuana has long been a nation of change and conflict. Following the defeat of the ruthless communist regime that had governed the nation since 2009 the Santuano people expressed a desire to rename their nation. The motion gained popular support and the new government officially changed the name of the nation from "Santosa" to "Santuana" taking the first step in the lengthy process of transitioning to democracy.

The word itself is a combination of Spanish and the Isla Corsan and Amaleno dialects spoken in remote parts of the nation. It was initially only a cultural name used by the Santuano themselves but during the war it entered common use among the rebels, and the allied forces, and gradually replaced Santosa as the common name for the nation.
