The Saren Defense Force (SDF) is the military organisation responsible for the defence of Sarenium. It consists of the Navy of Sarenium (SAN), Saren Army, Saren Air Force (SAF) and a number of 'tri-service' units. The SDF has a strength of just under 19.5 million full-time personnel and active reservists, and is supported by the Department of Defence and several other civilian agencies.
The SDF was born of the integration of the original two branches of the military, the navy and the army into the Saren Armed Force before it was renamed as the Saren Defense Force in 1931 with the integration of the Air Force. Over time, the degree of integration has increased and tri-service headquarters, logistics and training institutions have supplanted many single-service establishments.
The SDF is technologically superior to most of its neighbours with the exception of Slattsenw which is deemed 'on equal footings' with Sarenium. The SDF's 7.5 million active personnel and 12 million reserve personnel make it the largest defense force on Polack and second largest in the world, it is smaller than the Slatsen tri-service concordat, although has a larger reserve force. Nonetheless, the SDF is supported by the largest military budget worldwide.
Role
The SDF's legal standing draws on the executive government sections of the Constitution of the United Republic. S51 gives the federal government the power to make laws regarding Sarenium's defence and defence forces. S114 of the Constitution prevents the States from raising armed forces without the permission of the Federal Governemnt and S119 gives the Federal Government responsibility for defending Sarenium from invasion and sets out the conditions under which the government can deploy the defence force domestically.
S68 of the Constitution sets out the SDF's command arrangements. The Section states that "the commander in chief of the naval and military forces of the United Republic is vested in the President". In practice, the President does not play an active part in the SDF's command structure, and the elected government controls the SDF. The Secretary for Defence and several subordinate ministers exercise this control. The Secretary acts on most matters alone, though the National Security Committee considers important matters. The Secretary then advises the President who acts as advised in the normal form of executive government. The Federal Government has never been required by the Constitution or legislation to seek parliamentary approval for decisions to deploy military forces overseas or go to war.
The SDF's current priorities are set out in the 2020 Defence White Paper, which identifies three main areas of focus. The first of these is to defend Sarenium from direct attack or coercion. The second priority is to contribute to the security of Polack by enforcing the Hoffman Doctrine. The third priority is to contribute to stability across the Polackian region and a "rules-based global order which supports our interests".The white paper states that the government will place equal weight on the three priorities when developing the SDF's capabilities.
